At Ixworth High School, our mathematics curriculum is ambitious, coherent, and accessible to all students from Year 7 through Year 11. It seamlessly connects with both primary and post-16 curriculums to ensure a smooth transition and continuity in mathematical learning. 


We aim for our students to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, enabling them to reason logically and solve problems efficiently. This is achieved through a structured approach that includes: 

  • Visualizers: Utilizing concrete, pictorial, and abstract methods to help students understand mathematical concepts and make connections across various representations in different contexts. 

  • Describers: Emphasizing the use of precise mathematical language and questioning techniques in teaching, encouraging students to articulate their understanding and extend their mathematical thinking. 

  • Experimenters: Fostering fluency in mathematics and a passion for continuous learning and exploration within the subject.

To facilitate effective learning, our curriculum is meticulously sequenced. Key mathematical skills are introduced early and revisited throughout the five years, ensuring continuous reinforcement and mastery. 

The curriculum is divided into distinct blocks, each broken down into smaller, manageable steps arranged by increasing complexity and dependency. This ensures that each new concept builds on previous knowledge, consolidating prior learning while introducing new skills. 
We incorporate review steps in blocks where the content has not been revisited for some time, allowing teachers to tailor the curriculum to meet the specific needs of their students. The natural review process embedded in the curriculum sequence prioritizes fluency in each topic. 

Designed to be inclusive, the curriculum is adaptable by teachers to focus on smaller components as needed, supplemented by a support curriculum to address the diverse needs of all students at Ixworth High School. Lessons are designed to anticipate and address common misconceptions before they arise, ensuring a robust understanding of mathematical principles.
